Another Thursday is upon us, and that means it is time for yet another Booking Through Thursday prompt. What will it be this week, you ask? Here you go…Prompt: Do you remember learning to read? What’s your earliest reading memory?
I don’t remember learning to read, per se, but I do know that I was able to read going in to kindergarten and so while the other kids were learning to read, I was invited to go and read books out loud to the principal in her office for that time. I don’t remember what I read (it was probably just primers like Dick and Jane) but I do remember sitting in Ms. Olivier’s office and reading to her. One of my other earliest memories of reading is when I was growing up (this is late seventies, early eighties) was that the television was never on in the evenings. My mother would read to me each night. We read a lot books in my formidable years: the “Mary Poppins” series by P.L. Travers, the “Doctor Doolittle” series by Hugh Lofting, Thirty-One Brothers and Sisters (and it’s sequel Forty-One Aunts and Uncles) by Reba P. Mirsky, the “Winnie-the-Pooh” series by A.A. Milne, Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little by E.B. White and the books of Roald Dahl: The Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, etc. etc. etc.
